1 An inexact quotation from Pushkin’s Table Talk, a collection of historical anecdotes jotted down in the years 1830–36.

2 “Enough” is the title of Turgenev’s pretentious “farewell to literature” (1862), brilliantly parodied in Dostoevsky’s Devils. He continued writing for the next twenty years.

3 A reference to M. Ye. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826–1889), a leading radical journalist, satirist, and novelist with whom Dostoevsky feuded on and off for twenty years.

4 A Russian literary, social, and political magazine founded by Pushkin and published in Petersburg in 1836–66. It was the most widely read radical journal in nineteenth-century Russia.
